Born in Jersey, Sheila’s love of photography was not put into serious practical terms until her children were grown-up. Encouraged by her father’s success with colour slides, she began working in monochrome printing her own work and gained Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society. With a love of portraiture she became a freelance wedding and portrait photographer. In 2003 Sheila began submitting work to National and International exhibitions gaining many acceptances and awards including: the Racal Medal at the 29th Algarve International, the Ed Roper’s medal at Solihull and a medal for ‘Street Tango’ at the prestigious London Salon of Photography. On gaining the required number of acceptances/awards and submitting ten images for judging- Sheila was awarded the Credit of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain.
The Royal Photographic Society, founded in 1853 is the most prestigious International Photographic Society. The awarding of distinctions is fundamental to the Society’s promotion of standards of excellence, universally respected by amateur and professional photographers alike and in order to gain a distinction the photographer has to submit a portfolio for approval by a highly qualified Panel of Fellows of the Society. Sheila successfully submitted her portfolio to gain ’Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society’. On the home front Sheila is proud to have been accepted into membership of Genuine Jersey and can be contacted on 01534 726400 or by e-mail: sheilabirch@jerseymail.co.uk.
