First Genuine Jersey Christmas Fairs

Date: 22/11/2005 | Posted by John Garton
Islanders are being urged to shop local this festive period and make it a ‘Genuine Jersey’ Christmas. In a drive to encourage shoppers to support the diversity of quality local products, for the first time the Genuine Jersey Products Association (GJPA) is holding a series of Christmas fairs, specifically to showcase the local goods available.

Ken Syvret, chairman of the GJPA, says: “Thousands of pounds are spent at Christmas and we are encouraging shoppers to use this period to support local producers and artisans. ‘Buying local’ benefits our community in so many ways and the wealth of high quality products out there means it is now possible to have a ‘Genuine Jersey’ Christmas, from your turkey, vegetables and the crockery you serve it in, through to your wine, liqueurs and a whole range of gifts.”

The Christmas fairs take place at Jersey Pottery in Grouville between 6pm-9pm over the next three Tuesdays and are part of Jersey Tourism’s Fete de Noue celebrations.

Up to 20 members of the GJPA will be taking part in the fairs and stallholders will be offering a wide range of goods, which will make ideal presents to go under tree or to fill a stocking. There will also be plenty of delicious offerings to add a genuinely Jersey element to your Christmas dinner, as well as ideas for how to decorate your home.

A live Nativity and live musical entertainment will ensure there is plenty of festive atmosphere to soak up and a ‘Children’s Chocolate Factory’ will entertain the kids while shoppers look round the fairs.

Each week, a different local charity will benefit from the proceeds of a Genuine Jersey prize competition at the fair, as well as having a stall of their own.

The charities taking part are Family Nursing & Home Care; Jersey Hospice Care; and Side by Side.

The Glaze Craze and Jersey Pottery shop will remain open during each of the fairs, as will Spinnakers restaurant, which in addition to its normal menu will be offering a Genuine Jersey menu for £10, which includes bean crock, cabbage loaf and black butter cake.

The first fair takes place at the Jersey Pottery in Grouville between 6pm-9pm on Tuesday 29th November, with Family Nursing & Home Care as the charity. The following fairs are on 6th December with Jersey Hospice Care and 13th December with Side by Side.
