First Islands Farm and Craft Market of the year

Date: 25/04/2016 | Posted by John Garton

Jersey’s open-air markets return this weekend when stalls selling locally produced goods will be set up in St Aubin. This year’s markets are being organised by Genuine Jersey and sponsored by Islands - one of the Channel Islands’ leading insurance brokers.

The Farm and Craft Markets begin their 2016 run in St Aubin at 9 am on Saturday 30 April. At each market there will be local produce and wares on display, including art, jewellery and hot chilli sauces.

Many stall-holders will be members of the Genuine Jersey Products Association, which champions local produce and seasonality. Local musicians will also be performing at the markets.

Recent research undertaken by Visit Jersey among British visitors to the Island found that ‘visiting local markets’ was high on their must-do list, ranking above ‘going out for a special meal’.

St Aubin, which can trace back its first market to 1583, is not the only venue this year. The first market in the Island’s traditional ancient market place - Place du Marché’ – or as we know it today, the Royal Square, will be held on Saturday 7 May.

Genuine Jersey Chief Executive John Garton said: “The markets are growing with every season and this is only set to continue with Islands joining as a sponsor this year. The company is already a Genuine Jersey sponsor and supports the association through the provision of a collective insurance scheme for Members to cover public and product liability. Islands has always valued the importance of local talent and knowledge so they are an ideal supporter of the markets and what Genuine Jersey stands for.”

Islands Director Jim Purkiss said: “Islands is a long-established local insurance broker which has always had very close ties with the farming, fishing, tourism and hospitality sectors. As a Jersey company, we recognise the importance of providing a local friendly service coupled with personal and professional insurance advice together with bespoke insurance products, specifically designed for Channel Islands’ residents. Most importantly, we have an in-house claims team to provide help and reassurance when needed.

“Genuine Jersey’s aims of encouraging and promoting the growth of local businesses match our own, and we have been supporting its membership scheme with tailored insurance covers since 2009.

“When the opportunity arose to become involved with this year’s Genuine Jersey Farm and Craft Markets, we were delighted to assist and Islands wish Genuine Jersey and all its members every success in 2016 and beyond.”
