The official ‘Liberation 60’ wine produced by La Mare Vineyards has been flying off the shelves at a rate not experienced by the small vineyard since it launched its first sparking white wine, Cuvee de la Mare, for the Millennium celebrations in December 1999.
Over 20% of the anniversary vintage – the equivalent of over 1,000 bottles – was sold within the first five days of it becoming available earlier this month. About 30% has been sold to date.
Tim Crowley, managing director of La Mare Vineyards, says: “For a small company like ours, this is a phenomenal rate of sales and we are absolutely delighted that the ‘Liberation 60’ wine has gone down so well with Islanders. Jersey really threw itself into marking the 60th anniversary of Liberation Day so we expected the vintage to sell well, but certainly not at the rate it has.
“As it’s the last time the Island intends to mark the anniversary in a big way, people have been buying the wine as much for a collector’s item and a keepsake as to toast the anniversary.”
La Mare Vineyards, a member of the Genuine Jersey Products Association, produced the special red wine to mark the Liberation 60 anniversary. Made from a blend of Pinot Noir, Regent and Rondo grapes, the medium-bodied red wine is the 2004 vintage of ‘Bailiwick’ Jersey red, and has been grown, made and bottled in the Island. Over 5,000 bottles have been produced.
The wine was used at the Liberation celebrations for the Parish of St Mary before going on general sale ahead of Liberation Day at La Mare Vineyards, Maison La Mare in St Helier and at the Airport.
